On Saturday, March 28, 2015, Local 1549’s Women’s Committee hosted a Luncheon to celebrate Women’s History Month.

Local 1549 Women’s Committee Chair Stephanie Curtiss and Vice Chair Vera Flowers welcomed everyone in attendance.  Local 1549 President Eddie Rodriguez praised the women of the union, saying that the union would not exist if not for its strong women.  Executive V.P. Alma G. Roper also welcomed all of the attendees and thanked them for spending their Saturday with the Local at this special event.

Although she was unable to attend due to a minor illness, former DC37 Executive Director Lillian Roberts was honored with a short film presentation.  Current DC37 Executive Director Henry Garrido accepted flowers on Ms. Roberts’ behalf and expressed what a significant impact Ms. Roberts had on his life.  Mr. Garrido also spoke about the strength and dignity of his mother and went on to reaffirm the union’s commitment to seeking “equal pay for equal work” becoming a law.

Ms. Regina Wilson, President of the FDNY Vulcan Society and 1 of only 44 female firefighters in the FDNY, was the program’s guest speaker.   Ms. Wilson spoke of the adversity she faced, and how she overcame by sheer will and determination.  Her words were inspiring and motivating.

The Local 1549 Choral Group, under the direction of V.P. Roper, gave rousing performances and brought the attendees to their feet.  There were also moving Praise Dance performances by the Wings of Glory Dance Missionary, University Church of God, Queens, NY.
